Bend is the model for liquor license in 'Cartlandia'?

A story over at Oregon Live informs us that "Cartlandia" in Portland -- the place where a bunch of food carts gather, for the uninitiated -- is getting an annual liquor license.

That's interesting enough, but more interesting to our readers in Central Oregon is that Bend, with its outdoor beer gardens at the "fill-in-the-blank" fests and other events, may have helped matters. From the story:

"In my mind, I see this like I sometimes see in downtown Bend -- a roped-off beer garden," said commission member Ron Roome, who is from Central Oregon. Roome said he felt comfortable approving the license after the owners of the property, Roger Goldingay and his wife Carol Otis, agreed to close it after 10 p.m. on weekdays and 11 p.m. on weekends.

Could it possibly be long till one or more of the many food carts in Bend follow suit and apply for a license? If they do, Beau and I will have to cross off one of the items on our "list of things we think are good ideas but will never actually do (TM)". We've thought for a long time that a food cart with a liquor license would do gangbusters. We weren't sure the OLCC would go for the idea, but apparently, they did. So, here's hoping we can drink at Spork this summer.

  1. For those who haven't heard the news, Bend City Council is meeting wednesday April 4th at 5 pm at City Hall to adopt new rules proposed by City of Bend Planning Commission regarding food carts.... In a nutshell, no food carts will be allowed to park for more than 30 days in a calendar year without the property owner putting in storm drains, pavement, landscaping, a driveway, etc....

This, in effect, pits the landowner against their tenant, the food cart, forcing the landowner to make the not-so-difficult choice of spending tens of thousands of dollars in improvements to collect a couple hundred dollars in rent or evicting them.

Forget a liquor license, the carts are getting shut down altogether.

Bye-bye Spork, bye-bye Codfather, bye-bye Bee's Thai food, Guten, Crazy Delicious, Cascadia Kitchen, Mr. D's, Marz Cart, Real Food Bistro, and others. The City of Bend has effectively figured out a way to get rid of these pesky food carts that park without getting blood on their hands. They have placed the burden of "being the bad guy" squarely on the shoulders of the private property owners that rent space to these carts.

If you support food carts in Bend and can spare the time to show your support, I urge you to come to City Hall April 4th at 5 pm to make your voice heard. Anyone can take the mic for 3 minutes and speak. If you don't want to speak thats fine, but please show up so we can let Bend City Council see that there is overwhelming support for our food carts. Ask Bend City Council to reject the proposed rules as they are written, send the rules back to the Planning Commission for revision. Ask them to come up with a better compromise.

Please pass this information on to all you know.....Lets pack City Hall , lets send them a message!
